I have been OCRing the Morton Chronicle newspaper, which was first
published in 1880 by Edward W. Smith and later by Charles Whitaker. The
newspaper covered Swarthmore and points east, going as far as Lansdowne
and Fernwood. The paper was published once a week and was only four
pages. What makes the Morton Chronicle nice is that the owners used a
higher grade paper and it is still as white as it was a 130 years ago.
Because of the better quality paper it has reproduced very well.
Eventually I will have about 25 years of the paper on line that will be
searchable by name, noun etc. Myself and several local societies have
bound copies of the Morton Chronicle, from 1880 to 1911. Sadly, some of
the societies do not share well and there will be some gaps. After
trying various settings etc. to make the Chronicle the easiest to
search and read I think we have found the right settings. Let me know
what you think. Do to the large size of the files the paper had to be
put in six month files. The files do take a while to load so be
patient.
